The stress syndrome “burnout” and diabetes

In 1986 two researchers called Christina Maslach and Susan E Jackson, described what is known as Syndrome burnout or burnout syndrome be burned. This is a condition that affects professionals who are under a great deal of stress in their work. People who suffer from burnout may submit chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, addiction to alcohol, snuff or prescription or non-prescription drugs, hostility, irritability, lack of affection, gastric problems and other ills.

A new study conducted in Israel added to this list an increase in the likelihood of developing diabetes. In this study, the researchers observed 677 workers between 1998 and 2003. The average age of those age 43 years and nearly 77 percent were men.
It was found that those who suffered during this period of burnout syndrome or burnout had a 1.84 times greater likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes than those who did not suffered from this condition.

Although the study does not provide definitive evidence that stress increases the risk of diabetes is no less true that suggests that there is a relationship that we should not ignore. According to the researchers the study suggests that burnout can increase the risk of diabetes in a similar proportion to overweight, smoking or lack of exercise. When work stress reaches intolerable levels can be symptoms of burnout affecting the physical, emotional and cognitive people. This is a condition that is not contrary to normal tiredness disappears after a period of rest. Samuel Melamed, who was the principal author of the aforementioned study means it is possible that some people can not handle stress and its resources to prevent the damage caused by it have been exhausted as a result, not only the stress at work, but other situations of everyday life.

It is known that stress can adversely affect the body’s ability to handle glucose. This is especially true in some people who are genetically vulnerable. According to the authors, this study confirms the need to intervene to reduce the level of stress before it becomes a state of burnout or burnout.
