Diabetes - Overview

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease (controls but is not curable), which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body can not use it properly.
Under these conditions originates table known as hyperglycemia (excess blood sugar) that in the long run leads to irreversible damage to the blood and nervous system.

According to Dr. Wolach, “at the gangrene of the feet (diabetes is the leading cause of amputation of lower limbs), retinopathy (eye complication and cause of blindness in the world), nephropathy (kidney failure), neuropathy (structural damage of the nerves) and cardiovascular disease are the most serious complications of diabetes when the disease is abandoned to their fate. Conversely, a well-controlled diabetes and detected early, the patient will enjoy a good quality of life.

Why every day there are more diabetics?
One of the answers is that the average lifespan of human beings has increased considerably. Let us not forget that diabetes is a disease with the highest incidence in older people.
The other two factors that determine the appearance of the disease, and we can remedy are sedentary lifestyles and, most importantly, obesity.

The body has a limit

It’s scientifically proven that obese people have an increased risk of developing diabetes in the long term. And the explanation simple. The more we eat (especially fats and carbohydrates), plus we force our pancreas to produce insulin to lower the levels of blood glucose. If the situation persists indefinitely, it is time for which the pancreas to produce more insulin will have lost their ability to properly control the amount of glucose in the blood. This stage, pre-diabetes, known as insulin resistance. If the patient at this stage takes steps to lose weight and change their lifestyle may prevent the onset of illness. Otherwise, the vicious cycle (greater glucose, insulin more) maintained for several years, will lead to a depletion of beta cells responsible for producing the hormone vital giving way to type 2 diabetes. A truth that we can not ignore and that the statistics clearly show is that obesity and sedentary lifestyles are factors that predispose to the disease.
