Glucose intolerance

We know that the incidence of diabetes is much higher in the Hispanic community than other groups. But there is a condition that can precede diabetes is called glucose intolerance and of which little is spoken.

The glucose intolerance is the elevation of blood sugar by above-normal after eating. This happens with diabetes, but diabetes sugar level is even higher after eating and fasting. It is very common, it is estimated that 20 million people in the United States suffer and is seen as part of the metabolic syndrome that affects one out of every four persons in this country, and as half the people older than 60 years.

It is a major problem because it increases the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease. It is estimated that every year one out of every 10 people with impaired glucose tolerance develop diabetes. The good news is that with small changes in our eating habits and our physical activity, we can ensure that the level of blood sugar is maintained at normal levels. With regard to dietary habits, it is recommended to lose 5% to 7% by weight in the course of a year and stay at that weight. That means that if you weigh 200 pounds, which is down between 10 and 14 pounds in one year. As for the exercise, the goal is to do some aerobic exercise such as walking or biking for 150 minutes in the course of the week, which means as 22 minutes a day. This treatment has no side effects and it will feel better and prevent serious problems. As for diet, the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association for the treatment and prevention of diabetes published this year, recommended that 60% to 70% of calories come from carbohydrates (sugars) and monounsaturated fats and only 15% to 20% protein.

Since then recommended that sugars are what come from vegetables and fruits and fats are mainly recommended to be known as monounsaturated fats. Unlike saturated fats that raise the level of blood cholesterol, monounsaturated fat decreases the level of LDL, which is the fraction of the bad cholesterol that contributes to the blocked arteries.

Among the foods that contain monounsaturated fats have olive oil, walnuts, olives and avocados.

Of course, when we think of changing our diet, we think of things we like that we can not eat. But there are things that we like and that are part of our typical meal like guacamole and avocados which fortunately are not only permitted but are recommended in this and all diets for its nutritional benefits thanks to its content of vitamin E, acid Folic, potassium and monounsaturated fats. In addition avocado contains no salt or cholesterol. It is a very healthy alternative to traditional foods instead of cheese, cream.

So good advantage, and remember that if improved their eating habits and increasing physical activity will be looking after their health, either to prevent diabetes or control it better.
