Many individuals have trouble keeping their teeth white despite daily brushing and flossing. Dental hygiene is attributed to daily brushing and flossing. Teeth discoloration can be attributed to causes such as food and lifestyle habits. By making a few lifestyle changes, it is possible to prevent teeth discoloration.

Intensely colored foods and beverages tend to be the biggest cause for teeth discoloration. There are general rules of thumb for determining if a food or beverage will stain your teeth. If a food or beverage will permanently stain a white shirt, then it will be equally harmful to your teeth. The greater intensity of color present in food increases the likeliness for teeth discoloration. The color in foods and beverages comes from chromogens or intensely pigmented molecules. These chromogens latch on to dental enamel which appears as tooth discoloration or staining. Chromogens are not the sole violator present in food. Acidity of food is also a contributing factor. Acidic beverages which may or may not be brightly colored promote staining by erosion of teeth enamel. The temporary softening of the tooth enamel enables the chromogens to form with the tooth.

This is a list of popular beverages that have properties that promote teeth discoloration.

1. Wine. Wine is a popular social beverage that is a major cause of teeth discoloration. Red wine in particular is intensely colored and acidic. Although white wine is less intense it will also stain teeth.

2. Tea. Black tea is a drink that is rich in teeth discoloration properties. Tea has a higher likeliness of staining teeth than coffee. Tea is rich in chromogen, the primary cause of teeth discoloration. Tea drinkers should seek alternatives such as herbal, green, and white tea. These types of tea will are less likely to stain teeth than black tea.

3. Coffee. Surprisingly tea has a higher possibility of causing teeth discoloration than coffee. However, the dark coloring and slightly acidic properties present in coffee contribute to teeth discoloration.

4. Soda. Acidic and chromogen rich soda will cause significant staining. The dark caramel coloring and acid enable the chromogen to penetrate the tooth enamel. Even lighter colored sodas are acidic enough to promote teeth discoloration.

Usage of a straw can minimize the tooth discoloration effect of beverages. Sipping through a straw is believed to keep teeth protected from coming into contact with the acid and chromogen.

Since the mouth moves when speaking, the eyes cannot help but notice it. Dental hygeine is extremely important and many people let their teeth go and skip checkups. However, even without dental visits, there are a number of things you can do to keep your teeth healthy and white.

Natural teeth whiteners are a great way to maintain a bright smile. If you deal with people on a regular basis it may be a good idea to have your teeth whitened. It is also a good idea when compared to high priced dental procedures for the same results. However, some individuals feel that teeth whitening is an acceptable substitute for brushing and general oral hygiene. That would be a mistake. Teeth whitening is cosmetic at best and enhances the look of your teeth but it does not address total dental and oral hygiene.

Here are some helpful tips for oral health:

•	Brush teeth twice a day.
•	Use soft bristles since they cause less damage to teeth and gums
•	Use fluoride toothpaste.
•	Gently and thoroughly brush each side of every tooth and the gums.
•	Tongue cleaning using a scraper or toothbrush is also very effective in preventing bad breath.
•	Always rinse your toothbrush under water after use.
•	Always store your toothbrush in a clean dry place.
•	Do not share your toothbrush to prevent the spreading of germs.
•	Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush heads as often as possible.
•	Drink water after meals.
•	Use dental floss to clean between your teeth.
•	Don’t smoke. It stains your teeth and can also lead to disease in the mouth.

Are your teeth still not white? Then go ahead and break out the teeth whiteners. But always remember to do the above each day and you’ll be on your way to maintaining a healthy smile.
