Bacteria in the human body have been known to cause infections. This is why when we think of bacteria we think of it as harmful. Bacteria are everywhere and our immune system does the job of preventing most of it from harming us. There are also certain foods and well-rated natural supplements that can assist our immune system in fighting off harmful bacteria.

But is there such a thing as “good bacteria”? Yes, there is and it has a name – probiotics. Experts have long debated on how to define probiotics. One general definition is that probiotics are live microorganisms, which, if administered in the right amounts, provide a health benefit in the body. Probiotics can be found in foods and dietary supplements. Most probiotics are bacteria similar to those naturally found in your body’s digestive system. There are benefits to using probiotics such as to offset side effects from antibiotics like gas, cramping, or diarrhea. Antibiotics not only kill harmful bacteria but good bacteria also which is why supplementing with probiotics can be very beneficial. Some people use probiotics to ease symptoms of lactose intolerance which is a condition in which the digestive system lacks the enzymes needed to digest larger amounts of the major sugar in milk.

There are several types of harmful bacteria that cause disease such as yeast, fungi and parasites. Researchers are currently trying to explore whether probiotics could stop these harmful microorganisms before they can do any damage or suppress their growth and activity in health conditions that many suffer with such as:

• Skin infections
• Tooth decay
• Vaginal infections
• Infectious diarrhea
• Ulcerative colitis
• Crohn’s disease
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Stomach infections
• Respiratory infections and many others

Another reason for great interest in probiotics and probiotic formulas in supplements stem from the fact there are cells in the body’s digestive tract that are connected with the immune system. One working theory is that if you can alter the microorganisms in the body’s intestinal tract by introducing probiotic bacteria, then you can affect and improve the immune system’s defenses. In short probiotics is just another way to ensure that your entire system remains in good balance.
