Sleep? Yes. But Keep Breathing.

    Poor Sleep

Breathing. Something that we do unconsciously for the most part right? Unless you’re taking yoga and practice qi gong, it’s a fairly automated function and requires no conscious control or thought. However, there are times when the automated biological function fails us. If it should occur while you’re awake, you may be able to find relief almost immediately. But what if it happens while you’re asleep?

Sleep apnea is when your airway collapses and causes a vibration of the tissues. That vibration is also called snoring. Sometimes, the symptoms of sleep apnea are more severe causing suffocation and even asphyxiation. Not being able to breathe while sleeping is frightening. Not only is it life threatening but it can diminish the quality of life. Sleep apnea also disrupts normal sleep patterns which can lead to feeling tired all day.

Many have tried so many things to prevent it. From nasal sprays, mouth guards to various products chemically formulated to increase airways. We’ve all heard of breathe-rite strips which can feel like duck tape being ripped off your nose for those who have tried it. There are also several devices that some insert into the nostrils to keep breathing easy but it seems that by far naturally formulated oral products work the best. Whatever you decide to do to remedy blocked or collapsed airways it must be effective and not be the cause other health problems.

Some persons with particular medical conditions are more at risk. Diabetics have a greater challenge managing their diabetes due to insulin resistance if they suffer from sleep apnea. How many of us have high cholesterol. Experts have found that persons who had severe sleep apnea ate a diet that was unhealthy and that included high cholesterol, fat and saturated fatty acids. Also, if you are one of those persons who eat a large portion of food late or just before bedtime you are risking poor heart function necessary for healthy breathing.

It is recommended you eat earlier, at least several hours before bedtime, avoid high cholesterol foods and if you are already experiencing trouble breathing while you sleep or snoring look into a natural product to help manage and control it until your body returns to normal respiratory function.
Do you have any thoughts or other recommendations? If you do we welcome your remarks. Otherwise, sleep tight and breathe easy.

Are Prescriptions Drugs Really Safe Enough to Treat Joint Pain?

      Joint Pain

      Joint Pain

There are many causes of joint pain. The reasons can stem from chronic conditions including thyroid problems, fibromyalgia, anemia, poor quality of sleep or malnutrition to name a few. There are a number of natural methods on the market for treating or reducing joint problems and there are many advantages to taking natural supplements to manage joint discomfort. Many have reported a complete elimination of symptoms by using only all-natural supplements.

Other treatments for joint pain include the use of corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug. The problem with these prescription drugs are the side effects they carry. We all want to feel better but not at the expense of incurring more symptoms. Finding a treatment that does not have any side effects will prevent the vicious cycle from occurring in the first place.

Corticosteroids are used to relieve inflammation in joints and muscles. However, over time, side effects to do occur such as glaucoma, diabetes, osteoporosis fluid retention and swelling in the lower legs, increased blood pressure and weight gain.

The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are also meant to provide relief from swelling. However, side effects include gastro esophageal reflux disease, especially for people who have lupus. Persons with lupus are prone to developing this disease when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory prescriptions. Others experience a decreased appetite, skin rashes, dizziness, fatigue, headaches and nausea.

Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic medications are also used to treat such conditions. These are often used in combination with other medications. Side effects include upset stomach and a sore mouth. Another serious side effect is interference with bone marrow’s production of blood cells. If this occurs, low blood cell counts can cause fever, swollen lymph nodes and infections. In addition there may be liver or lung damage even with low doses. There are more side effects such as temporary hair loss, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rashes or weight loss. Every disease-modifying anti-rheumatic prescription type will present a few of these risks and the effects will vary from person to person.

In the light of the above, finding natural supplements devoid of side effects for treating joint pain is highly recommended.

How Can Bacteria Be Good For You?

        Good-Bacteria

Bacteria in the human body have been known to cause infections. This is why when we think of bacteria we think of it as harmful. Bacteria are everywhere and our immune system does the job of preventing most of it from harming us. There are also certain foods and well-rated natural supplements that can assist our immune system in fighting off harmful bacteria.

But is there such a thing as “good bacteria”? Yes, there is and it has a name – probiotics. Experts have long debated on how to define probiotics. One general definition is that probiotics are live microorganisms, which, if administered in the right amounts, provide a health benefit in the body. Probiotics can be found in foods and dietary supplements. Most probiotics are bacteria similar to those naturally found in your body’s digestive system. There are benefits to using probiotics such as to offset side effects from antibiotics like gas, cramping, or diarrhea. Antibiotics not only kill harmful bacteria but good bacteria also which is why supplementing with probiotics can be very beneficial. Some people use probiotics to ease symptoms of lactose intolerance which is a condition in which the digestive system lacks the enzymes needed to digest larger amounts of the major sugar in milk.

There are several types of harmful bacteria that cause disease such as yeast, fungi and parasites. Researchers are currently trying to explore whether probiotics could stop these harmful microorganisms before they can do any damage or suppress their growth and activity in health conditions that many suffer with such as:

        • Skin infections
        • Tooth decay
        • Vaginal infections
        • Infectious diarrhea
        • Ulcerative colitis
        • Crohn’s disease
        • Irritable bowel syndrome
        • Stomach infections
        • Respiratory infections and many others

Another reason for great interest in probiotics and probiotic formulas in supplements stem from the fact there are cells in the body’s digestive tract that are connected with the immune system. One working theory is that if you can alter the microorganisms in the body’s intestinal tract by introducing probiotic bacteria, then you can affect and improve the immune system’s defenses. In short probiotics is just another way to ensure that your entire system remains in good balance.

Some people have read less than desirable things regarding colon cleansing supplements and maybe you have too. Others feel that it’s a really good way to clear toxins from out of the body as long as you find the right product.

Colon cleansing supplements may help detoxify your digestive system. Many who have severe digestive problems or constipation where the body or bowel have difficulty eliminating waste and bacteria find it quite helpful. The key is to not over do it as constant colon cleansing can increase the risk of dehydration. If abused, it can also create a rise in the body’s electrolyte amounts, which presents a serious risk if you have a heart or kidney disease.

If you choose to do a colon cleansing, it is always advisable to:
          • Check with your doctor especially if you are taking any prescription drugs or have existing health problems.
          • Look into all natural colon cleansing products and review the herbal ingredients and amounts in them.
          • Beware of manufacturers that claim to cure illnesses with a colon cleansing product.
          • Drink water and lots of fluids during the colon cleansing to prevent dehydration.

The decision to get a colon cleanse is up to you and there will be some people who need it more than others. It may be just the thing you need to get things moving along correctly. Even if the product is natural, it should not be taken all the time. It simply provides support for your system till it does what it should naturally. Just remember to keep the above points in mind before you start your colonic.

          Happy cleansing.

Control Herpes Outbreaks by Avoiding Stress

            Herpes Stress

            Herpes Stress

There are many factors that can lead to a herpes outbreak. Among these is stress, diet or even the weather. However, stress is the most common. We need to further define stress as it has many forms. There are two aspects worthy of consideration as they have an effect on the immune system which can in turn cause an outbreak.

The first aspect is stress brought on by an irritating influence. By this we mean anything that can change your mood negatively. A person can be the source of this type of stress or even a particular situation or circumstance you find yourself in. Often, it can be the combination of both elements. You can include anger and even deep anxiety in this category. Of course, the other element that determines your vulnerability to an outbreak is whether or not the situation can be resolved or avoided. The longer the negative feeling builds and persist the greater your chances of developing an outbreak.

In a situation like this, one suggestion is to always practice remaining calm so as not to let it affect you and, in turn, affect your health. Easier said than done – true. And for some of us it will take practice but well worth it.

A second aspect is stress as a result of fatigue. What is not meant is the fatigue one feels after exercise. What is being referred to here is the “chronic” feeling of always being tired and not being able to rest. The feeling can last for days or months. Unfortunately, we’re only human and are susceptible to these types of stresses. In a situation such as long hours at work, fatigue and frustration usually occur at the same time. If you are constantly working and you throw in an unhealthy dose of frustration, a herpes outbreak is likely to occur depending on how well you’re able to handle it. This escalates because now that the outbreak has happened, the outbreak itself becomes another source of stress.

Stress cannot always be eliminated. The best thing you can do is take a break. Stop, relax or even walk away for a moment or two. Remember to place a marker in that book, save your work on the computer or highlight where you left off so that the stress does not return because you can’t recall where you left off before you took that break.

There are a number of all natural products that can treat outbreaks and even prevent them from occurring. But, managing your stress is the key. This is harder to do in real life since the pressures of living cause stress and cannot be avoided. The tips above have helped many get through the day without having as many outbreaks. Watching your diet and investing in a great all natural method for keeping outbreaks under control won’t hurt either.

            Tips to a Brighter Smile

              Whiten Teeth

              Whiten Teeth

One of the first things you notice about someone when having a conversation with them is their teeth. Since the mouth moves when speaking, the eyes cannot help but notice it. Dental hygeine is extremely important and many people let their teeth go and skip checkups. However, even without dental visits, there are a number of things you can do to keep your teeth healthy and white.

Natural teeth whiteners are a great way to maintain a bright smile. If you deal with people on a regular basis it may be a good idea to have your teeth whitened. It is also a good idea when compared to high priced dental procedures for the same results. However, some individuals feel that teeth whitening is an acceptable substitute for brushing and general oral hygiene. That would be a mistake. Teeth whitening is cosmetic at best and enhances the look of your teeth but it does not address total dental and oral hygiene.

Here are some helpful tips for oral health:

              • Brush teeth twice a day.
              • Use soft bristles since they cause less damage to teeth and gums
              • Use fluoride toothpaste.
              • Gently and thoroughly brush each side of every tooth and the gums.
              • Tongue cleaning using a scraper or toothbrush is also very effective in preventing bad breath.
              • Always rinse your toothbrush under water after use.
              • Always store your toothbrush in a clean dry place.
              • Do not share your toothbrush to prevent the spreading of germs.
              • Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush heads as often as possible.
              • Drink water after meals.
              • Use dental floss to clean between your teeth.
              • Don’t smoke. It stains your teeth and can also lead to disease in the mouth.

Are your teeth still not white? Then go ahead and break out the teeth whiteners. But always remember to do the above each day and you’ll be on your way to maintaining a healthy smile.

                Cholesterol Side Effects

Any prescription medication usually has side effects. Most of these side effects are unpleasant. The reason most people deal with side prescription effects is because they would rather put up with them than the condition the medication is supposed to treat. What arises from this is a need to have new medications prescribed to deal with the side effects and so begins the vicious cycle of drug use. This is why natural supplements for the management of cholesterol levels are always recommended since they contain zero to no side effects.

Many of the well-known drugs used to treat high cholesterol fall under the drug category known as statins. These include popular brands such as Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, and Pravachol. Common side effects are nausea or muscle soreness due to kidney malfunction. It is important to know and understand the risks of taking prescription medication sand how they interact with other drugs.

There is a condition known as Rhabdomyolysis where muscle protein and myoglobin are released into the blood stream. The break down of proteins and other materials create toxins that enter the kidneys. This is dangerous because it can completely shut down the kidneys in the extreme cases. Not all patients diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis experience muscle pain and weakness but it is a common symptom along with nausea and vomiting, fever, dark urine and abnormal fatigue.

In some of the worse cases prescription drugs for cholesterol can cause myopathy, which is an acquired muscle disease where the patient suffers from muscle pain, tenderness or muscle weakness. In this condition, there is a breakdown of the muscles, which releases muscle protein into the blood. As the kidneys process those muscle proteins, they begin to breakdown as well. That condition is known as renal failure which is a high price to pay for treating high cholesterol.

There are a number of natural alternatives that have been very successful in the treatment of high cholesterol. Natural supplements along with a balanced diet and exercise create a powerful combination for overall health.

Nail Polish, Artificial Nails & Nail Fungus

                  Nail Polish

                  Nail Polish

Nail polish is a nail varnish or lacquer applied to toenails or fingernails. Nail polish can really adorn nails beautifully. But it is used not only for appearance but also as nail protection. Nail polish is worn by both men and women. How many times have you seen male rock musicians adorn themselves with varying colors of nail polish as a fashion statement. Nail polish has a long history and the product itself has gone through several evolutions to what it is today.

Another widely used product is artificial nails. Women use these widely and some men swear by them when playing the guitar because it helps them to pick the strings more cleanly to produce a more articulate sound without having to grow out and constantly manicure natural nails.

Unfortunately some people use nail polish and artificial nails to cover up nail fungus. Are you one of them? A natural remedy applied right away is the most effective solution when nail fungus presents itself. Waiting any longer for the infection to go deeper will be harder to treat. And although it may look nice on the surface, guaranteed what lies beneath the surface is a bed of bacteria rapidly spreading. Wearing dark color nail polish will not stop the bacteria and eventually not even the nail polish will conceal it.

Artificial nails can become loosened. When this happens, they can trap moisture between the stick on, press-on or artificial nail and your own natural nail. The moisture collects in the pockets created once the adhesive holding the artificial nail to your own gets weaker and loosens. Bacteria can only thrive in warn, dark and damp environments and they are small enough to make that tiny space a home for breeding.

Nail fungus can present itself on toenails or fingernails as thickened, discolored or ragged and brittle looking. It can take months for new healthy nails to grow after treatment. There are natural products that address this problem without running the risk of developing other side effects and they also prevent recurrences. So by all means sport those exotic nail polish colors and wear artificial nails responsibly and always keep some natural antifungal available just in case.

                    Acne

                    Acne

Some of us are still struggling with acne even in adulthood, years after its initial onset. We’re embarrassed by it and, if it’s not too much trouble, we’d just like it to go away. Many of us have felt that way and though some of us have managed to conquer acne many are still contending with it. They are many treatments available but natural acne treatments are always recommended because of their low to zero risk of side effects.

Some of us who never had acne may still develop it. It does happen. They just call it “adult” acne. Adult acne can be brought on by stress, low quality cosmetics, hormone changes or even birth control pills. Stress can cause your oil glands to overproduce. Inferior quality cosmetics can lead to pores that get laden with bacteria. Hormones cause the oil secreting gland (sebaceous glands) to overcompensate leading to breakouts which can happen when using birth control pills.

Regardless of the type, it can be depressing and even cause low self-esteem because of either our own perceptions of beauty or someone else’s we are trying to live up to. We always want to make some kind of pleasing impression and it’s hard to do that when your face is riddled with acne scars and you’re forced to find ways to hide the scars or even worse shy away from people to avoid being seen.

A dermatologist can prescribe a pill to get rid of the acne but it often comes with extreme side effects. In addition, if you’re on a budget, a dermatologist may not be the most economical way to manage the problem. Take the time to compare some all-natural acne remedies so you can address the problem effectively without creating a new one. Proper diet, exercise and cleanliness can’t be stressed enough. You still need to do all the things necessary for the fostering of healthy skin. It won’t happen overnight but acne can be treated effectively without a prescription or other chemicals that can harm your body in other ways.

                      Quit Smoking

                      Quit Smoking

How many of us have a smoker in the family or work with someone who smokes. Perhaps that person is you. Everyone knows that they should stop smoking but how many actually do it. There are a number of natural methods that address the symptoms or “urge” to smoke. If one really want to stop smoking perhaps the place to start is get some assistance in fighting the urge for the cigarette.

Some people stop (or refuse) to smoke for religious reasons because they see their body as a “temple”. Others have been shocked into quitting by certain graphic advertisements that air on television or the internet. Do you recall the commercial where the woman displays her lost fingers as the gruesome side affect of her smoking habit? You‘ve probably seen her face on the billboards on the sides of buses. Or what about the man who now speaks through an electronic voice device while disinfecting the hole in his throat as part of his routine. And who can forget the anti-smoking “truth” campaigns during television commercial breaks designed to appeal to your logic and reason.

Despite all this, some of us still want to light up. So clearly, ignorance is not the problem. Nicotine is an addictive drug and in today’s world filled with all kinds of stresses, people turn to a casual smoke for relief. What starts out as an occasional cigarette becomes a pack a day or more habit.

Let’s not sugar coat it. Regular smoking of cigarettes will kill you. That being said, let’s be more constructive here. The first question that must be honestly answered is whether or not the individual really wants to quit. If the individual has no desire to stop, despite knowing what smoking causes, then they have knowingly accepted their possible death from lung cancer or some other related condition brought on by the habit. This is not negativity, just realism. And unlike some other addictive substances, smoking does show signs of physical deterioration so the effect is not hard to miss.

The “urge” that smokers feel is a chemical dependency to nicotine, to be precise. There are a number of anti-smoking products that address the chemical dependency naturally which is the safest course to take. After all, why would you want to exchange one chemical addiction for another?
