Yeast Infection OverviewOverview Of Yeast InfectionsThe human body is naturally colonized by many microorganisms. These are bacteria and fungi that are present on the skin, mucous membranes, gastrointestinal tract and vagina. They do not have any pathological effects but help ward off damaging bacteria.
In the vagina, lactic acid bacteria and yeasts, in low numbers, build the so-called vaginal flora. The normal balance of this flora may be altered by various influences, so that the number of lactic acid bacteria decreases, and the number of fungi gets out of hand. The following reasons may disturb the healthy vaginal flora, and yeast infection can occur: - Changes in hormone levels by taking anti-conception pills A fungal infection of the vagina causes typical symptoms, which can be pronounced to different degrees. Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include: - Redness and swelling of the labia Treatment Options Of A Fungal InfectionVaginal infections are normally treated with anti-fungal creams and pills. These are drugs that kill the fungus and prevent its propagation. In between 1 to 6 consecutive days, the agents of the anti-fungal cream are applied to the affected genital area. The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the infection. In most cases, the therapy results in a permanent cure. Side effects, such as skin redness and burning, are rare and usually not serious. Other rules apply to recurring yeast infections. If the fungal infection is not cured after the treatment described above or the infection occurs more than twice a year, then this is called a chronic infection. In this case, a therapy with tablets, called oral triazoles, may be necessary. These tablets should not be taken during pregnancy. Although fungal infections of the vagina can be more stubborn during maternity time, they are treated with vaginal suppositories and creams. A woman can contribute a lot to prevent fungal infections of the vagina. It is essential that the vaginal flora is not disturbed, as any change in its balanced environment makes the vagina vulnerable to infections. Preferably, the genital area should be cleaned with water and low pH-neutral soap. Synthetic underwear and panty liners with plastic wrap create a more humid environment, thus are an ideal breeding ground for fungi. Breathable materials such as cotton are ideal. The composition of the diet also affects the vaginal flora. If the food is extremely high in sugar, the vaginal fluid changes. Therefore, fungi will find optimal conditions for propagation. Thus, a healthy and balanced diet is recommended to avoid yeast infections.
