Hives occur on the skin as red, itchy welts or swellings that vary in size. Itching and burning are associated with hives and can appear suddenly. Angioedema is a form of hives where the swelling occurs below the skin. In a majority of cases, hives are harmless and do not leave any scarring. Hives occurring on the throat or tongue may be life threatening. The swelling can block the airway and restrict airflow. Antihistamines are the most common treatment for hives; however natural, homeopathic treatments exist.

What are the different types of hives?

Hives

Acute urticaria is the most common type of hives. It occurs as an allergic reaction to food, medicine or infection. These set of hives generally last less than six weeks.

Chronis urticaria is classified as hives that last more than six weeks. The cause is generally harder to diagnose and requires a physician's help. Chronic urticaria can affect internal organs. Some of the symptoms associated with this type of hives are muscle soreness, shortness of breath, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Physical urticaria is the manifestation of hives through direct physical contact. Examples of physical stimulus that produce hives are extreme cold or heat, sun exposure, stress, sweat, and exercise. This form of hives does not spread and generally occurs in the place of contact. The appearance of hives may manifest within one hour of contact.

What is the cause of hives?

Hives are a visible inflammation on the skin. In some cases hives occur when cells release histamine into the bloodstream and skin. This form of hives is usually related to a food allergy. Allergic reactions to medications and foods cause hives. Foods such as peanuts, shellfish, eggs, milk, alcohol, and fish can cause hives within sensitive individuals. Some medications may also trigger a reaction resulting in hives. Take special care when consuming medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen for the first time. Other allergens such as pollen and animal dander are in the air may cause hives as well. External factors may cause an onset of hives. For instance, an increase in stress or long exposure to sun can trigger inflammation which manifests as hives.
