Educating yourself on alternative methods to promote prostate health is not only beneficial health-wise but can also be economical. There are, in fact, herbs that have been scientifically proven to promote prostate health.

Before going into what herbs promote prostate health included here is a short summary about the prostate.

What is the prostate?

Prostate Diagram

The prostate is a tubuloalveolar exocrine gland composed of different parts of the male reproductive system.

Ok, a little biology. If you don’t remember it from school here’s a quick recap. It’ll go sort of like “the hip bone connected to the… thigh bone, then the thigh bone connected to the… knee bone” song.

First, the tubuloalveolar exocrine gland is a gland having a branching tube which ends in a duct that release alveoli.

The alveoli are tiny air balloons at the end of bronchioles. The bronchioles are smaller tubes that connect the bronchi and carry air to the alveoli.

The Bronchi are two large tubes that connect your windpipe with the right and left side of your lung to carry the air to all parts of the lung. The bronchi are the place where the air (oxygen) from your lungs can enter into your blood to be carried all over the body. All parts of a person's body need oxygen to live.

What the Prostate does

The main function of the prostate is to store and secrete a slightly milky fluid that usually constitutes 25-30% of the volume of the semen along with spermatozoa and seminal vesicle fluid. Semen is an organic fluid, also known as seminal fluid, that usually contains spermatozoa. The seminal vesicles (glandulae vesiculosae) are a pair of simple tubular glands posteroinferior to the urinary bladder of males.

Prostate Function

The prostate also contains some smooth muscles that help expel semen during ejaculation.

To work properly, the prostate needs male hormones (androgens), which are responsible for male gender characteristics.

The main male hormone is testosterone, which is produced mainly by the testicles. Some male hormones are produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands.

But what regulates the prostate? Dihydrotestosterone.

Dihydrotestosterone belongs to the class of compounds called androgens, also commonly called androgenic hormones or testoids. Androgens are part of the biology of gender by stimulating and controlling the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics.

Common Prostate Problems

Prostate problems too often put a damper on the activities of men of all ages and they are far more common than previously thought. According to numerous studies, more than half of all men over 50 years of age suffer from an enlarged prostate and its symptoms. As men age, up to 80% will suffer from uncomfortable symptoms that may include difficulty urinating, increased frequency and urgency of urination, bouts with sleep-disturbing nighttime urination and painful lower backache. Prostate difficulties are costly, too. Every year about 400,000 men have prostate surgery; adding over $3 billion annually to our national health care bill.

Most men know more about a women's monthly cycle than they do about their own body and its sexual health, yet problems with prostate gland are as common in men as period problems in women.
