Fighting ObesityFirst Steps to Fighting ObesityObesity occurs when the body carries excessive amounts of fat. The current outcries against obesity are far more than a cosmetic cause for alarm. Obesity carries along with it serious health consequences such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Obesity is a problem that occurs at all ages. There has been a 15 percent increase in obesity amongst preschool aged children. This means that an alarming amount of children entering the public education system are not being taught healthy habits at home. There are many causes for obesity. Although some of reasons are due to genetics, a majority of the reasons can be controlled. Inactivity is a huge factor in obesity. Calories that have accumulated throughout the day and are not burned through activity are one of the main causes. With the invention of video games, children have found entertainment indoors on the couch. Many adults that work full time jobs are sedentary for a majority of the day then come home exhausted. A sedentary lifestyle can easily become a routine, and without the exercise these calories turn to excessive fat leading to obesity. In association with inactivity, unhealthy diet habits are a major cause of obesity. In a world of fast paced action, fast food is an easy solution. Fast food meals are packed with high-caloric content. Without a way to burn off the calories the fast food is stored as fat. Another issue regarding eating habits is the portions served by these restaurants. These portions are often double the size of a normal portion of food. Many fast food chains offer up-size options for meals. Individuals that are obese suffer from an increased risk of health issues. An obese individual has an increased risk of getting cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and cancer. The increased risk is due to the elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin resistance that come along with poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Other none fatal diseases that are related to obesity are sleep apnea, varicose veins, and gout. The easiest step to take towards a fight against obesity is getting off the couch. Make a resolve to develop moments in the day for exercise. Exercise increases blood flow throughout the body and burns calories that create fat. Consulting a doctor prior to creating the exercise plan will help determine the appropriate level of exercise. Another solution to consider is a dietary change. Eating small meals throughout the day increases the body's metabolism. A high metabolism increases the body's ability to break down food. It is suggested to eat approximately six small meals a day. When eating out, split the portions to a half serving to eliminate over eating. There are natural supplements that increase metabolism, block carbohydrates, and suppress appetite. Maintaining an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits are two easy steps towards fighting obesity.
